Try as hard as you can, your carpet or rug must finally fall victim to spills, stains, drops and other accidents, which will dirty them to the point of requiring a cleanup. It’s therefore important that every carpet or rug owner knows the right methods of maintaining clean and fresh carpets. The following five methods cover the major aspects of carpet and rug maintenance, listed in no specific order.
Vacuuming your carpet or rugs, is a daily routine that you will have to adhere to, if you want to keep your home warm and comfortable. Rugs and carpets are unfortunately dust magnets, but your vacuum cleaner will be your helper here. Both upright and canister vacuum cleaners can get the job done, but if you have a carpeted staircase for instance, then you should probably invest in a canister vacuum cleaner. You can read the canister vacuum cleaners ratings and reviews online to discover just how much easier they can make the job of carpet cleaning for you, especially around corners.
You may own special area rugs that are small enough to be machine washed, or those that you may need to take outside, spread them out and properly wash or dry-clean. You should take extra care with special or antique rugs, and with even other non-standard rugs. Always check for a label to know if the rug is washable. If you decide to machine wash, then use cool water with a gentle cycle. Larger or more fragile rugs can be properly hand-washed with commercial carpet cleaning solutions. Just make sure that you read and follow the directions on the package.
3. Stain Removal
Once your rug gets that inevitable stain from a spill or any other accident, remember that you have to move quickly and blot the stain away. You should place a cloth or paper napkin on the area and hold it down for so long, until as much of the liquid is blotted out. Then mix 1 teaspoon of dish soap with a quarter-teaspoon of white vinegar and 1 quart of water. This mix should be able to remove alcohol, coffee, tea, lemonade and most other types of stains. Simply apply to the affected area, rinse and blot dry.
Sometimes, your carpet will require more than simple cleaning. You may have little kids or a pet that will soil your rug in one way or the other. The only way out in such situations will be to disinfect the affected area or even the entire carpet. What you’ll need is a steam cleaner that you will fill with equal amounts of hot water and white vinegar. Use it to clean the affected area, following the machine’s instructions, and then allow the carpet enough time to dry. If possible, you should do this during the night, so that your carpet has until morning to dry.
The woven nature of carpets and rugs, makes them susceptible to occasional hosting of unpleasant odors. This could happen for a number of reasons, but once you have determined that your carpet smells unpleasantly, what you will need is a mix of 1 cup of borax with 2 cups of cornmeal. Simply sprinkle this mix on your carpet, and let it sit for about an hour. After an hour has passed, vacuum the powder mix, and your carpet should regain its freshness.
Once you either own a carpet or a rug, then the above five maintenance methods should be of importance to you. Although it is practically impossible to avert carpet accidents, once you get a carpet mess for any reason, you should now be armed with enough knowledge to tackle the situation.
